Common Area Lighting

Lighting Social Environments
Our mission: Influence how people feel in common healthcare spaces

We see caring for people as a communal activity. Common spaces are another opportunity to do more with light for patients, families and other visitors beyond simply lighting their way. The lighting plan for hospital entrance halls, reception areas and waiting rooms can help people feel welcome and reassured, subtly lowering stress levels and calming fears associated with the “hospital experience". Purposeful lighting design helps create a sense of positivity and hope, building trust in the facility and those who work there.

Social lighting is also practical lighting. It helps people orient themselves in unfamiliar environments and more easily adapt to light level changes as they enter and depart. It makes reception areas immediately identifiable as such, so visitors know where to turn. It helps people identify staff in elevators and lobbies and highlights signage and architectural points of reference. Thoughtful lighting design helps make complex and unfamiliar spaces simpler to decode and navigate.

User comfort is another area where lighting can do more. Symmetrical and asymmetrical general lighting provides discreet and uniform illumination while reducing glare, particularly for the eyes of patients being transferred on hospital beds. Accentuated lighting can give the elevator lobby a comfortable and friendly feel. Posters and paintings on the walls can be highlighted through an asymmetrical-beam light. Step lights allow for dimmed nighttime lighting while maintaining safety. Our unique approach to creating a sky with the Observe™ cloud creates a new opportunity in lighting common areas, bringing the outside in and reflecting our inspirations' belief in the positive effect of daylight.

Observe™ Cloud I had rather have the power of carrying my patient about after the sun, according to the aspect of the rooms, if circumstances permit, than let him linger in a room where the sun is off. Nightingale, F (1859) Notes on nursing

With Observe™ cloud, users can switch between a unique sky mode, where innovative optical treatment creates a calming sky transporting a patient from thoughts of their procedure to thoughts of being back in the natural light.

Changing the way we light healthcare environments. Exam and ambient modes are expected, but change your perspective with sky mode! Helping patients relax, our Observe™ cloud luminaire uses a unique combination of optics and color to create a fixture that is switchable between a biophilic sky mode, soothing ambient mode, and exam mode. Observe™ cloud takes you away from the present and gives you a view to bright, warm, healthy days ahead!
